Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it free? - is there a catch?

Over the last few years coffee shops, cafes, hotels and other public areas have offered wireless internet access but have made a charge for the service. Recently these locations have realised that completely free access is much simpler to operate and is a great way of attracting customers - there's no catch!

Who can use it?

Absolutely everyone. Fishing boats can get up-to-the-minute weather forecasts, visitors can access information about Scarborough's hotels and attractions, businesses can place orders, track deliveries etc, conference delegates can have online access to their companies, and everyone can check their emails!

How good will the Internet access be?

Initially the network will simply be supplied by two broadband lines running at approximately 5Mbps,
both with a contention ratio of 20:1.

ix wireless access points should each handle at least 50 simultaneous users.

Are there any download restrictions?

No. But usage will be monitored and unreasonable demands will be restricted.

Who's paying for this?

Initial hardware costs have been joint funded by Yorkshire Forward and South Bay Traders Association.
